Life Reflected in Art

It’s a lay in bed all day and eat chocolate when I’m hungry kind of day.  I feel like my heart is 10,000 feet underground.  I’m trying to give myself permission to be in the space that I am, when there are a million things around me demanding attention.  The life of a melancholy… How does the rest of the world live with us?  My husband, so sweetly, sang ‘You Are My Sunshine” to me before getting out of bed, knowing I was going to have one of those days.

Misty Mawn’s Open Studio class began a few days ago, and I’m loving every second.  So grateful to my family who bought me a spot in the class for me birthday.

Charcoal and White Pastel Only

Yesterday we had some writing assignments and I chose to make a video to add voice (or in this case, a whisper) and aesthetics to my heptastich poem (a poem with seven lines):

I must understand myself.  I must understand the world.
My basic fear is that of being defective. I’m missing something.  Others have it.
Overwhelmed by my emotion, I indulge in melancholy.
Feeling the sadness of the world, I retreat within.
The world is invasive, so confusing.  I need privacy to think.
I seek integrity and moral courage.
I seek to go home, from whence I came into being.

You Were Loved – Wynonna Judd | Finding Self Worth

Sepia Horse smaller 751 1024x768 You Were Loved Wynonna Judd | Finding Self Worth

The very first time I heard this song was eight years ago, in 2003.  I was in a ‘life boot camp’ of sorts where I was given the opportunity to see how I showed up in life, and how others honestly perceived me.  It was a pivotal time in my life where I was desperate for some help to make some major life changes, and I wasn’t afraid of honest feedback (which was not always pretty).  I regard this time in my life with much gratitude, as it was a springboard to a better way to live.

I went from a chronic victim (self-imposed), blaming everything ‘bad’ that ever happened to me in my life for my problems, to taking responsibility for my life and being accountable for my choices.  I crossed over from an unforgiving soul who held on to grudges so deep, to a forgiving soul who realizes that everyone is on their own path, trying their best (or not), and realizing that I could choose whether or not to let others actions affect me and the way I chose to live and respond to life.   I learned to go with the promptings in my soul, no matter the judgment I would receive from others – something I was deathly afraid of and debilitated by.

This song always takes me back to that place and reminds me of my worth that I discovered I had.  In the end, we all want to give the love we have, and be loved and ‘seen’ by others.

We all want to make our place in this world
We all want our voices to be heard
Everyone wants a chance to be someone
We all have dreams we need to dream
But sweeter than any star you can reach
Is when you reach and find you’ve found someone
You’ll hold this world’s most priceless thing
The greatest gift this life can bring
If you can look back and know
You were loved.
CHORUS:You were loved by someone
Touched by someone
Held by someone
Meant something to someone
Loved somebody
Touched somebody’s heart along the way
You can look back and say
You were loved.
You can have diamonds in your hand.
Have all the riches in the land
Without love do you really have a thing
When someone cares that you’re alive
When someone finds their world in your eyes
Then you’ll know you’ve find all you need
You’ll hold this world’s most priceless prize
The sweetest treasure in this world
If you can look back and say
You were loved
CHORUS
So many roads that you can take
Whatever way you go
Don’t take that road alone
Better you should know…
You were loved by someone
Touched by someone
Held by someone
Meant something to someone
Loved somebody
Touched somebody’s heart along the way
You can look back and say
You did OK
You were loved.
So remember to tell that one
You are loved.

The Civil Wars | Dance Me To the End of Love

I fell in love with this video by The Civil Wars, called Dance Me to the End of Love, after viewing it today at the recommendation of an old friend.  I love it so and so I would love to share it with you here.  Could singing ever look more beautiful and soulful?

As for me, I’m trying to get comfortable with blogging again.  In my long hiatus I’ve been engaging in other artful mediums, such as photography, drawing, and painting – I’m sure I’ll be posting some things here.

After such a long break from writing, I’m feeling way rusty and a little too inward to share so much right now.  It’s funny, you start a blog and obviously know it is public, up for anyone to read, but then you start hearing people you know say they read your blog, and suddenly it becomes a little bit uncomfortable!  Ehhh.  I’m sure I’ll find my way back on a more regular basis again.

Thanks for reaching out and sending private messages.  I’m sorry I haven’t responded to every one of them.  It’s that complicated introvert in me…

Thanks for reading :-)

This morning I ran across this short film called Validation, posted by Vivienne McMaster.  Normally once I had seen that it was 16 minutes long, I would have watched the first little bit to get the gist of it, and then stopped it. But this short film had me totally engaged and curious until the end.  Take a look – it’s bound to make you smile.
